London Petticoat Lane Market

Petticoat Lane Market, London

London Petticoat Lane Market is a great place for those who like to get hip clothes and shoes, books, CD's or artwork for the best available price. More than a thousand stalls stretch over two streets to make up this popular market. Petticoat Lane Market in London has been operating since the 18th century or earlier and is named after the petticoats and laces that were sold there by the Huguenots who came to London from France. It was later renamed Middlesex Street as the prudish Victorians wanted to avoid references to women's underwear, however the name has remained in people's minds and the market retained the old name.

London Petticoat Lane, the street, no longer exists as the street was renamed Middlesex Street during the Victorian Times. Established in the 1700's, the market was an area where Jewish immigrants had settled. It is still probably one of London's most famous street markets and it always has a lively, vibrant atmosphere. The majority of the stalls sell clothes (which is how the market got its name), mostly new but some second hand garments as well. Other goods are also on sale such as jewellery and accessories. Sunday is the busiest day with over a thousand stalls to choose from. Petticoat Lane Market, London is so popular that some tour operators even offer excursions to the market. If you are in the area, take care of your wallets and handbags as many pickpockets are known to operate in the area.

A trip to Petticoat Lane Market, London should definitely be included in your agenda, even though the area around Middlesex Street is fairly run down. It is also a great chance to meet some real Cockney people... but don't expect them all to look like Dick Van Dye!
