London Notting Hill
Notting Hill in London
Notting Hill is home to many of London's rich and famous. Pop stars such as Madonna, Seal, Leo Sayer and politicians like ex-Chancellor Norman Lamont live in the area. It is not surprising that a small 2-bedroom mews house costs over a quarter of a million pounds there. Notting Hill, London was made even more famous by the movie 'Notting Hill' starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.

During the Bank Holiday weekend in August, the area hosts the Notting Hill Carnival, Europe's largest street carnival. The carnival, which started in 1996, is a truly multicultural event, with the opportunity to sample lots of different types of food and music. The main focus however is the carnival procession with its oil drum steel bands and eccentric floats and costumes. (Strangely enough the oil drum has not been used for 50 years in Trinidad, where the steel band music originated.)

Although the carnival went through some difficult times when the crowds broke down and violence erupted a few years ago, the problems have been worked out now. Around 1.25 million converge on the streets of Notting Hill, making it a difficult job for the police but it is generally a peaceful though noisy event.
