London Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge

London is a city full of architectural and engineering marvels and heritage constructions. One such monument guaranteed to take the breath away is the iconic Tower Bridge of London built 42 metres above River Thames. It was designed to rise partially when huge ships needed to pass underneath the bridge.

Build during the Victorian era in 1894 by architects Wolfe Barry and Horace Jones, this drawbridge is more than a hundred years old. The length of the bridge measures 197 ft or 60 metres and the two towers that give the bridge its name, are 43 metres tall. Earlier the drawbridge used to be raised nearly 50 times a day but now the frequency has come down to 4 or 5 times a week.

The top of the London Tower Bridge offers a majestic view of the city. Stand on the high level walkways of the bridge and look around to see some of London's famous sights including the sky scraping Canary Wharf, The London Eye, Greenwich maritime and St. Paul's Cathedral. Special windows allow the visitor to take good shots of the various monuments, London skyline and the river flowing below.

Guided tours take the visitor inside the tower to explore its history through films, displays and hands on exhibits. One can also observe the original steam engine and mechanisms used to raise the bridge in the impressive Victorian engine rooms. A virtual bridge lift demonstrates the way the two bascules are raised to let the huge liners pass beneath.

Tickets for the exhibits can be purchased on the spot as well as online but two weeks in advance, with no refund in case of cancellations.
