Now disguised a little by the Vodaphone name, The Derby is one of the most established and most famous horse racing events of the calendar and is regularly attended by members of the Royal Family - from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth down. The Derby was launched by the Earl of Derby in 1779 and now offers prize money in millions of pounds and attracts around 10,000 visitors. Set in the rolling Epsom Downs the course is a particular challenge for qualifying three year olds and their jockeys alike. Queen Elizabeth will arrive, as usual, in a horse drawn carriage and the entire event, especially the famous Ladies Day, is as much a fashion event as a horse race, where the great and the good do their best to outdo each other. The Derby itself takes place on the Saturday. Ladies Day and The Oaks race are on the Friday.Visiting Event The Vodafone Derby Festival:
Nearest Hotels: Park you car at Quality Crown Hotel Kensington and take the tube direct to Victoria Station, for the train to Epsom Station and a short taxi ride from there to the race course. You can drive there, of course, but demand on the car parks is very high and you are liable to face a long walk.
