Turner Prize 2008 LondonAlthough the Turner Prize event spent last year in Liverpool - when the city held the title of "European Capital of Culture" - it returns to London in 2008.

Undoubtedly the best known and often the most contentious prize in the world for modern art, the Turner Prize, which comprises both a substantial cash award and the prestige associated with the name, has seemed to revel in attracting controversy over the years. The artists shortlisted for the 2008 Turner Prize include Cathy Wilkes - an artist using various household items such as widescreen TV's and prams in her work - and Runa Islam - a filmmaker chosen for her solo exhibition "Centre of Gravity" at Kunsthall, Bergen and the National Museum of Art, Oslo as well as her display at the Venice Biennale 2007. Mark Leckey is an artist who combines sculpture, film and sound - thus, defying clear categorisation - and Goshka Macuga completes the shortlist. Goshka Macuga's has also produced combined media displays, some of which have been displayed at Tate Britain - a solo exhibition entitled "Objects in Relation" formed a part of the "Art Now" exhibition in 2007.

The Turner Prize exhibition continues from September through into January 2009 but the winner of the £25,000 cash prize will be announced during a live show on Channel 4. Despite, or perhaps because of, the inevitable protests from many critics in the art world, the show is a 'must see' for lovers of contemporary art.
