This light hearted operetta is set in a decadent Paris of the early 20th century when seemingly, according to Lehar's 'The Merry Widow', the main occupations of society were socializing, drinking champagne and gossiping about who might fancy whom. In contrast in the background is the poor country of Pontevedro, which is a none too subtle disguise for Montengro, then part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The operetta starts with the celebration of the Grand Duchy of Pontevedro's birthday at the embassy in Paris and enter your merry widow - Hanna Glawari, who inherited an enormous sum from her late husband and is now prime marriage material for the impoverished Pontevedrians. However, Count Danilo a one-time love who was prevented from marrying Hanna when she did not have any money, muddies the waters and a series of comical will-they won't-they moments result, and with a number of other society dalliances you will be kept entertained throughout this famous lighthearted operetta.
