The Courtauld Cezanne's 2008 - Courtauld Gallery ExhibitionsGiven his wide popularity today, it is an odd fact of history that Paul Cezanne (1839-1906), the famous Impressionist, miserably failed to impress critics and most collectors in his own time. Happily, Samuel Courtald did appreciate Cézanne's work and, following his acquisitions, The Courtald Gallery holds the best collection of Cézanne's works in Britain. For the very first time, the full collection can now been seen all together. Paul Cézanne drew his inspiration from the delightful scenery around the family home near Aix-en-Provence, in France, and many of his works in the collection depict the surrounding countryside - including the more recently highly acclaimed 'Montagne Sainte-Victoire'. Along with the main collection are several letters written by the artist and watercolours of his as well as some recently discovered details on the artist's working techniques.
