With freezing temperatures, it's just as well the swimmers braving the icy waters have the incentive of the Peter Pan Cup legacy to compete for: The Peter Pan Cup Swimming Race in London dates from 1904 when J.M. Barrie, author of "Peter Pan" presented the cup to the winner.
Spectators are welcome at the Peter Pan Cup 2011 in London; a stroll across Hyde Park to the Serpentine is a good way to work-up an appetite for Christmas Lunch. If you are brave enough to experience the ice-cold lake temperatures on Christmas Day morning, make sure you have pre-registered yourself with the club in advance.
