The Queen lays wreathes of poppies at the Cenotaph, at Whitehall. 10,000 veterans will march past the memorial site.

The poppies are symbolic of the blood shed and they are chosen as a symbol of remembrance because these flowers bloomed on French, Belgian and Italian fields during the fiercest battles of both World Wars. The first Remembrance Day was conducted in 1919 throughout Britain and the Commonwealth. It was originally called the Armistice Day, it commemorated the end of hostilities of the previous year. It came to symbolise the end of the war and provide an opportunity to remember those who had died. http://www.army.mod.uk/ceremonialandheritage/household/remembrance.htm
