Flora London Marathon 2009 One of the world's largest and best known Marathons comes around on this weekend every April. Some 30,000 runners pour through many of the best known streets of the capital, mixing serious competitors with charity fund raisers in the hoped for April sunshine. The 26.2 mile route comes alive with music from bands along the way, cheering supporters and feet pounding along at various different speeds. The serious competitors who have spent the last 11 months preparing for the event are, of course, always the leaders but the charity fundraisers add much to create a carnival feel to this huge event. Fundraising plays a big role in the Flora London Marathon 2009, and organisers claim it to be the largest annual fundraising event in the world.

The course of the Flora London Marathon is fast and flat, and basically runs along the River Thames on the south side and then the north side after crossing the river by the famous Tower Bridge. The Flora London Marathon starts at Greenwich Park and Blackheath, continues through number of famous London landmarks, including Tower of London, London eye, Parliament Square and the 140-year-old clipper ship, Cutty Sark with the finish on The Mall by Buckingham Palace.

The fastness and scenery of the course makes the organisers describe it as 'An Historical Jog Around London'. You can watch from most spots along the way, although it is best to plan your point and to be there well ahead to join in this spotting event cum festival.
