Nelson Mandela, ex-President of South Africa and an avid campaigner against the most dreaded disease AIDS turns 90 years this June. He arrives in London this June to participate in a three day series of events planned to mark his birthday. The events will culminate in a three hour long charity concert titled, "Honouring Nelson Mandela Concert" organised by the 46664 AIDS Foundation on Friday 27th June 2008 at Hyde Park. The proceeds from the concert will go to the foundation to enable it to further its social cause.Nelson Mandela concert will feature several popular artistes such as Annie Lennox, Queen + Paul Rodgers, Leona Lewis, Dame Shirley Bassey, Simple Minds, Razorlight, Jerry Dammers, Sugababes, and Jamelia along with African and South African artistes Johnny Clegg, the Soweto Gospel Choir, Sipho Mabuse, Loyiso, Aids orphan choir The Children of Agape, Papa Wemba and Emmanuel Jal.
Celebrities confirmed for this mega celebration include US ex-President Bill Clinton, Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Robert de Niro, Forest Whitaker, Will Smith, Oprah Winfrey, Lewis Hamilton, International 46664 Ambassadors Italy's Zucchero and Spain's Amaral. Besides these, many unexpected guests - from the Royal family, politicians and celebrities from the field of sports, film and entertainment will also be present to surprise and honour Mr Mandela on his big day.
The 46664 AIDS Foundation runs a campaign in Africa and the world over to raise social awareness about the dreadful effects of AIDS and educate people regarding preventive measures. It takes its name from Mandela's prisoner number 466/64. During the apartheid period, then liberation movement leader, Nelson Mandela was confined in the jail on Robben Island in South Africa for 27 long years from 1964 to 1991. In 1994 he was democratically elected as President of South Africa. He continues to work as a human rights activist and heading the list is the fight against AIDS and right for education in his country. This is his first major public appearance since his retirement from public life in 2004.
