Head of the River Race in London is the largest continuous rowing event on Earth. A truly traditional London event, the Head of the River Race involves an impressive 420 'eights' or 'boats with eight rowers'. In March, the rowing teams will take to the waves for the huge Head of the River Race 2012 in London along the River Thames, from Mortlake to Putney Bridge.
Head of the River Race '12 in London is four and quarter miles (6800m) in total, from Mortlake to Putney. A much bigger challenge than the normal a thousand metre for a regatta and two thousand metre for the Olympics, Head of the River Race in London usually takes over two hours to finish. Adverse weather conditions along the River Thames can only add to the challenge as teams fight to stay above the waves!
You don't need to take part in this London rowing event to enjoy it. Thousands of spectators line along the banks of the River Thames, eager to cheer-on the athletes while watching from the cafes and pubs surrounding the river. Simply enjoy the view of London, the energy of the race and hopefully the warmth of the Sun! Apparently, the best place to watch the Head of the River Race '12 in London is the north part of Hammersmith Bridge, even though it's smart to check with local police on the day to make sure that the bridge is not closed. Another recommended place is the Surrey bank above Chiswick Bridge.
