For many young artists, the £25,000 BP Portrait Award in London is the springboard to the real fine art world. The wonderful competition, conducted yearly at the London Southampton City Art Gallery, is open to everybody from the age of 18 to submit their work for an exhibition. Sponsored by the British Petroleum for the twentieth year, the BP Portrait Award at the Southampton City Art Gallery in London is one of the most prestigious competitions of this kind worldwide.
60 entries are shortlisted for the exhibition every year, making the Portrait Award at the London Southampton City Art Gallery an interesting and stimulating exhibition for those interested in arts. The exhibition is vibrant and as a few of the portraits incorporate photographic techniques; others use a number of other different tricks to divulge the internal lives of their subject matters. Previous year's winner, Craig Wylie, for example, displayed a hyper realistic portrait of his girlfriend, Katherine Raw.
The BP Portrait Award in London aims to encourage artists to concentrate on the theme of portraiture in their work.
