Lord Protector of England, Oliver Cromwell thought he had done the country a favour after he freed it from its King but he actually turned out to be worse. He and his henchman were extremely puritanical so in 1647, they banned Christmas! Some of our most treasured Christmas celebrations were made illegal; from Christmas services to holy hanging, carol singing and even eating mince pies! The law banning mince pies actually still stands, although no one cares anymore.
The London Dungeon has gruesomely recreated this dark period of history, complete with several heads eating their last mince pies, robins on spears and burnt Christmas trees.
