Telephone: 44 (0)871 663 2501
Two unusual, large pieces of modern art will be placed outside the Southbank Centre in London as the area prepares for the London Design Festival series of events. The art installations are called 'Size + Matter' and bring state-of-the-art architecture and creative design to the public streets of London around the South Bank Centre.
The Art Installations on the London South Bank will be two works by the artists Marc Newson and Shigeru Ban. Marc Newson's creation is 'Supercell': An incredible mixture of colour, steel panels, plant and organic marine forms. The work can be appreciated from both the ground and windows above in the Royal Festival Hall.
Its huge funnel will rise from the South Bank in London so passers-by will have no problem catching a sighting. The second artist, Shigeru Ban, will be unveiling a 22 metre tower of cardboard tubes which will tower over the embankment walkway at the South Bank Centre. People will be able to stand inside and glance up into the narrowing form.
The art installations, Size + Matter exhibits will stay in place after the London Design Festival and throughout the Frieze Art Fair. At the end of their South Bank life, the two London art installations will be auctioned and awarded to the highest bidder.
