Think of Romeo and Juliet, Anthony and Cleopatra and classic as well as more modern stories through the ages and you will appreciate that doomed love affairs have been a favourite topic for authors since time immemorial. There are few more dramatically expressed such tales than Verdi's "Aida", which is set in Ancient Egypt and tells of the hero and heroine caught on opposing sides in a war with neighbouring Ethiopia.Aida is captured by the Egyptians and, unbeknownst to them, is the daughter of the Ethiopian king Amonasro. However, Aida falls in love with the Egyptian warrior hero Radames and becomes torn between her loyalty to her father and people and her new found love.
Inevitably, the couple meet a sad end but Vridi's entrancing score carries the audience through all the up and downs - battles won and lost, plots devised and hearts sadly broken. The English National Opera tackle this classic opera with the expectation of leaving scarcely a dry eye in the house. Claie Rutter retruns to the title role and John Hudson stars opposite her in this return of last year's very successful presentation. This version benefits also from the skills of fashion designer Zandra Rhodes work in creating the scenery and elaborate costumes of the courts, pyramids and battle scenes of Ancient Egypt.
