London By Car

London city is not the best place to explore by car; traffic in the capital is horrendous during the peak times so sightseeing might become too time-consuming and frustrating. Public transport is ideally designed for this busy city with residents as well as tourist choosing a quick and efficient means of transport. With the introduction of the London Congestion Charge on 17th February 2003, £8 charge to enter central London has put off many from renting a car. Congestion Charge applies Monday to Friday between 7am and 6:30pm. Outside of these hours on weekdays, public holidays and weekends are free. £200 million pounds has been spent on the detection cameras so it is likely you will be caught if you do not pay.

Renting a car, however, is a great idea if you want to explore more of England. Once you are out from the hectic zones 1 & 2, you might feel like heading somewhere to Stratford-Upon-Avon to visit Shakespeare's birthplace or to peaceful Cambridge or Bath which are all quite easily accessed.

Most often your car pick up point will be at one of London airports, so it is better to rent in advance, otherwise from a central London hotel you might need to go back to the airport just to pick up the car.

Hertz is one of the more popular companies hiring cars and if you are with a family or a group of friends it is cheaper to rent a car rather than travel by train or coach. Hertz has offices across central London and most London airports.
