Hyde Park Guide
Central London can definitely boast its beautifully preserved Hyde Park, which is one of the largest parks in London, famous for Speakers' Corner, where you can listen to free speech at its best. Summer in Hyde Park is a wonderful time to spend a day with family and friends in this peaceful yet central location.
Hyde Park was the site of The Great Exhibition of 1851, for which the Crystal Palace was designed by Joseph Paxton and has an extensive history of mass demonstrations and protests. The Chartists, the Suffragettes and the Stop The War Coalition have all held protests in Hyde Park. Many protestors on the Liberty and Livelihood March in 2002 started their march from Hyde Park. Today the Hyde Park hosts many concerts and attracts thousands of people.
Next to the Hyde Park there are Notting Hill, Queensway and Bayswater areas within walking distance and a range of popular museums from Madame Tussauds within 10 minutes walking distance to Natural History, Albert and Victoria and Science Museums just across the Hyde Park.
The Grand Entrance to Hyde Park: Hyde Park Corner Grand Entrance is a magnificent piece of art next to Apsley House, a home of the Duke of Wellington. It features huge columns, three carriage entrance archways and two foot entrance and 33-meter frontage.
A rose garden, designed by Colvin & Moggeridge, was added in the southern part of Hyde Park in 1994.
Interest points: Hyde Park is an interesting place to explore. Speakers' Corner near Marble Arch is where you can hear all kinds of speeches by people from different backgrounds. In the centre of the park there is the Serpentine lake with swans. The memorial for Diana, Princess of Wales is to the south of the Serpentine and to the east of the Serpentine, just beyond the dam, you will find the London's Holocaust Memorial.
