The Criterion Theatre in London, very popular for excellent theatre shows is currently showing John Buchan's The 39 Steps, Britain's most spell-binding thriller.
The London Criterion theatre opened with the production of An American Lady written and performed by Henry Byron in 1870s. Charles Wyndham took control over the Criterion in 1875 and managed to turn the theatre into the leading light comedy house in London. During the World War II, the Criterion theatre was demanded by the light entertainment programmes and the BBC were together recorded and broadcasted live. After the war, the Criterion repertoire incorporated ultra-modern works like Jean Anouilh's Waltz of the Toreadors and Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot.
The Reduced Shakespeare Company made the Criterion Theatre in London their house for 9 years finishing in April 2005. Ever since then new shows have included: What the Butler Saw; Otherwise Engaged, The Gruffalo; and Mack & Mabel. The current production of The 39 Steps, adapted by Patrick Barlow, opened on Sept 20th 2006. Being praised as hilarious and spectacular, The 39 Steps is one of the most popular London musicals as well as the Best New Comedy winner in both the Olivier Awards and in whatsonstage.com Awards.
